Several weeks ago, all of the candidates for City Council received a request from Santa Monicans for Responsible Growth asking that each of them fill out a long, complex questionnaire explaining why he or she was running for the Council and what their views were on basic issues, such as growth and development.

A majority of the candidates were offended at being braced by people they didn’t know from an organization they’d never heard of. They talked a lot about the need for transparency, and refused to answer any questions until the group’s members identified themselves and their reasons for being.

Other Council candidates found the militant approach to a group of Santa Monica voters bizarre and responded cheerfully, as they did to all inquiries.
