For over 30 years, official City of Santa Monica policy has been to close Santa Monica Airport (SMO) as soon as possible. But it is still open.

Over 80% of around 1,400 people in local surveys want SMO air traffic reduced, mitigated, or eliminated.

Despite public opposition, the City’s Airport visioning process rejected all options to reduce SMO operations.

The Santa Monica Airport costs taxpayers MILLIONS of dollars in tax subsidies every year.

The City leases space to Airport businesses at far below market rates. These businesses then sub-lease space at market rates reaping millions in annual profits.

Aircraft based at SMO pay no landing fees.

There are more than 100,000 flight operations annually; on average there are over 300 EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Hearing loss can occur at 85 decibels (dB). SMO’s noise limit is 95 dB. Jets can exceed 100 dB at takeoff.

Approximately 60% of all SMO flights are flight school and training related. SMO has 6 flight schools.

30-40% of all SMO flights loop locally, practicing takeoffs and landings, causing almost continuous noise.

Prior to 1993 there were less than 2,000 annual SMO jet operations. Today there are around 12,500.

The majority of planes or jets that use the Airport are NOT owned by Santa Monica residents

A G450 (largest jet at SMO) burns 400 gallons/hour, it can contain up to 4,400 gallons on takeoff.

The G450 recommended takeoff distance is 600 feet longer than the SMO runway! The FAA waived their own rules to allow these C & D jets at SMO.

SMO is the single largest source of a number of types of toxic air pollution in the city of Santa Monica. Piston pleasure aircraft deposit large quantities of unregulated LEAD over local schools each year.

Corporate jets annually deposit tons of hydrocarbons, carcinogens and carbon particulates over the surrounds.

Since 2004, there has been an average of one accident/incident every 6 months associated with SMO.

Recently, there has been an average one plane crash every 12 months that resulted in fatalities.

There are homes located within 250 feet of the SMO runway.
