EDUCATIONAL ACTIVIST JONATHAN KOZOL SPEAKS IN CULVER CITY
Jonathan Kozol, a brilliant writer and definitive voice on education in America, will present material from his new book. “Fire in the Ashes: Twenty-five Years Among the Poorest Children in America,”on Monday, September 10, at 7 pm at The Willows Community School in Culver City.
The lecture, which will be followed by a book signing, will focus on the journeys of inner city children, introduced by Kozol in his earlier books, as they grow into adulthood and “ignite a flame of hope” for themselves and society.
Kozol has devoted forty years to the causes of education and social justice. He began his educational career as a fourth grade school teacher in a Boston inner-city school during the Civil rights movement in the early 1960s. His “Death at An Early Age” describes his first year of teaching. His most recent book “Fire In The Ashes” is a powerful and climactic work, in which Kozol returns to the scene of his other prize-winning books “Savage Inequalities,” “The Shame of the Nation” and “Amazing Grace.” A National Book Award winner, Kozol has been called “today’s most eloquent spokesman for America’s disenfranchised.” He, however, believes young people speak most eloquently for themselves; and “Fire in the Ashes” bursts with the vitality and spontaneity of youth.
The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Make reservations at
