Come hear the story of Henry Gaylord Wilshire, known as the millionaire socialist, and how he acquired a 35 acre barley field and turned it into a 16 mile thoroughfare from Santa Monica to downtown Los Angeles. Lou Rosen is author of “Henry Gaylord Wilshire: The Millionaire Socialist” and will be presenting his research.

Sri Lanka Day, Saturday, August 25, 10am-10pm
Sri Lanka Day is an annual one-day event presented by the Sri Lanka Foundation on the Third Street Promenade. The day showcases Sri Lankan musicians, dancers, food and businesses. Since the first event in 2006, Sri Lanka Day has grown to become the largest event promoting Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan culture in U.S.A.

McCabe’s Guitar Shop presents Eleni Mandell & David Dondero, Saturday, August 25, 8pm
Eleni Mandell’s brand new album, I Can See The Future, was produced by Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, The Strokes, White Stripes) and features a slew of great players (Greg Leisz, Steve Berlin, Joey Waronker, and others) adding a variety of instrumental flavors that complement and frame her dreamy, understated vocals.
Also on the program is David Dondero, about whom No Depression says: “…has shown a remarkable ability to capture the heart of America in his songs, which he does with his rambling, poetic narratives, like a modern day Jack Kerouac, and in turn captures the heart of humankind.”

Jazz on the Lawn: Rogelio Mitchell & Friends, Sunday, August 26, 5-7pm
Panamanian-born Rogelio Mitchell has drawn from the musical styles of the Caribbean islands to create a sound rich in rhythm and harmony. With his unique blend of calypso, reggae, soca and jazz, Mitchell has toured extensively throughout Central and South America and has appeared at such festivals and series’ such as the Santa Barbara Jazz Festival, LACMA Latin Sounds and the Distant Accords Awards. Treats for this week are Frozen Crush Italian Ice, Alili’s Fresh Fruit and IZZE Sparkling Juice.
