RESIDENTS JOIN EFFORT TO CURB SPENDING ON PRISONS

America, which Abraham Lincoln called “man’s last best hope,” leads the world today in the percentage of its citizens who are currently in prison. It is impossible to imagine anything stupider than spending more and money on prisons while slashing education, jobs and health care budgets.

The Mass Incarceration sub-committee of the Committee for Racial Justice has joined the call on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to curb prison spending and expansion and increase funding for jobs, education and health services.

On Tuesday, July 17, members of the subcommittee will join other advocates of reduced prison spending and increased spending on schools, jobs and health services at a 9:30 AM Supervisor’s meeting in the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration, 500 West Temple Street for a “No More Jails LA” Speakout.

They will travel downtown by bus from Santa Monica. Anyone who Would like to join them on the bus should RSVP to Joanne Berlin at the Church in Ocean Park.

Among the organizations that are involved in the campaign are Californians United for a Responsible Budget, and Community-
Based Solutions.
