JUNETEENTH TO BE HELD SATURDAY
Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, will be held this year on Saturday, June 16, at Virginia Avenue Park.
The observation of June 19th as African American Emancipation Day originated in Galveston, Texas in 1865, and has spread across the United States and beyond.
Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom, emphasizes education and achievement, and is marked by celebrations, speakers, picnics and family gatherings.
In the words of its founders, “It is a time for reflection and rejoicing, for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. People of all races, nationalities and religions come together on Juneteenth to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Only when we understand the conditions and experiences of others can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.”
There will be music, food, cultural arts and crafts, and speakers at Juneteenth 2012. 12 noon to 5 p.m.
Virginia Avenue Park is located at Pico and Cloverfield.
