SM CONSERVANCY SPOTLIGHTS LANDMARKS
The Santa Monica Conservancy’s latest tour, “Living in a Landmark,” on Sunday, June 3, offers tour-goers a unique opportunity to visit some of Santa Monica’s most historic homes!
Landmark buildings are not frozen in time. The tour and reception will demonstrate how landmarks – like all buildings – evolve and change to meet the needs of successive owners. Each home is a case study showing how sensitive stewardship of historic properties can be balanced with the desire to upgrade, improve, and, in some cases, add to living space.
The Home Tour, scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. next Sunday, will feature five outstanding landmarks, each reflecting the creativity and individuality of its current owner: the adaptive reuse of an 1875 historic church as a residence; the renovation and expansion of a Craftsman airplane bungalow; A Craftsman home showcasing the owners’ special collections; the care and maintenance of Irving Gill’s circa 1919 Horatio West Court; and the expansion of a beautiful Craftsman home on Palisades Avenue
Following the tour, a fund-raising reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., in support of the Conservancy’s educational programs, at the Zimmers House on La Mesa Drive, a John Byers adobe landmark that has been skillfully restored and expanded for a family with young children. This award-winning project exemplifies the art of creating new life for a historic landmark. The Zimmers House was built in 1924, and designated in 2008
