Mrs. Shriver Is First Sibling, Too

Tweet In the days since Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s death, much has been written and said about her singular and extraordinary complishments (see stories below). She changed and improved the world by making a place in it for the  intellectually challenged all over the  world, Now Mark Shields,  political commentator and former Washington Post columnist, writing in Noozhawk.com,   spotlights another of Mrs. Shriver’s accomplishments. Shield describes the bizarre, crude and... Read More

WELCOME TO DOWNTOWN SANTA MONICA

Tweet By Susan Hartley I always tell clients to be careful about parking in Santa Monica because Santa Monica is vicious about parking.  They all agree. Years ago, a suite mate told me he doesn’t let Santa Monica parking tickets get him upset.  He just figures that’s part of the cost of living and doing business in Santa Monica.  I’ve followed his wise advice.  UNTIL NOW. Parking in Downtown Santa Monica has gotten even worse.  In addition to a dearth of parking spaces,... Read More

Laurel Roennau Dies Thursday

Tweet This old beach town is a little more vulnerable today because Laurel Roennau, its smartest, fiercest and most eloquent defender. died early Thursday morning. She had not been well for some time, and so she had not been able to appear at City Council meetings to protest  the latest mindless diminution of the town she loved so ardently. Every time, including the last time, I called her to see how she was faring,  she was far more interested in hearing how the town was doing. She... Read More

UFW, Chavez Family Saddened By Passing of Great Friend

Tweet All of us in the farm worker movement and the Chavez family were deeply saddened by the passing August 11 of Eunice Kennedy Shriver. We cherish the bonds that have linked us with the Kennedy family, and particularly Sargent and Eunice Shriver, over nearly four decades. We have shared encouragement and support during times of  challenge and peril. But throughout we have been bound together by common faith and values. Those links will continue living in our  hearts. All... Read More

Eunice Kennedy Shriver: 1921-2009

Tweet By Clara Sturak I was lucky enough to spend some time with Eunice Shriver — she joined her son, (then candidate for Santa Monica City Council) Bobby Shriver, during an informal roundtable with homeless service providers in the dining room of his home. She said up front that she was just there to listen, but it was amazing to watch her keep her son on track throughout, often with just a look. “People first,” she’d quietly remind her son, when he’d... Read More

Words from an Athlete Ambassador Fairfax, VA – “Thanks Mrs. Shriver”

Tweet By Frank Stephens, Special Olympics Athlete There is a very large hole in the world today.  It is the size of one person, but it will take an awful lot of people to fill it back  up again.  The space that Eunice Kennedy Shriver filled in the world was just a lot bigger than most people.  Her heart alone > seemed to be limitless.  There was always room there for one more  of us. You see, I am a man with Down Syndrome and my life is worth living because Mrs. Shriver... Read More

The Life of Saint Eunice

Tweet By Colman McCarthy Tuesday, August 11, 2009; 1:04 PM My friendship with Eunice Kennedy Shriver began in 1966, when I bumped into her — literally — during a pickup basketball game on Timberlawn estate in Rockville. I had begun working that year for her husband, Sargent Shriver, at President Johnson’s Office of Economic Opportunity. Before the game, he counseled me: Guard her closely; she can be ferocious. Throw an elbow or two and go all out to win. The... Read More

My Mother, Santa Monica and I

Tweet By Bobby Shriver August 11, 2009 I am so happy my mother was able to campaign for me in my first race for public office when I ran for city council in 2004.  She loved campaigning here.  Door to door, the phone bank, the events.  She called them all “teas” because that’s what they called them in Boston in the 40s and 50s when her brother Jack ran for Congress and in the 20s when her grandfather John Fitzgerald (known to one and all as “Honey Fitz”) ran... Read More
